   The Great Famine
   The Famin was in 1846 and 47. A farmer lived near Drangan and he had a big farm and he had a man watching a garden where he had turnips set. A man Went into the Garden for to get one to eat. He pull up a turnip out of the Ground and when he had taken and bit out of it he was shot. The farmer and the man that shot him had to go to America. There is a field in Spring hill it was sold by a man named Maher to a man named Dennis Kiely for a bag of meal. He sold it afterwards for £700 to Mr Gleeson and he have it yet.
   William Rochford of Killenaule used to walk every morning to the Horse and Jockey it was about eight miles from this town and work there eight pennies a day and walk home in the night. The Irish Cholera followed the Famine. The Government gave one lb of meal to every poor person. The men that gave out the meal were called special constables
