    I always saw my aunt placing a "red coal" under the churn (the dash churn) when churning. Any one coming into the house must take a hand at the dash. No person should take a coal out of the fire to kindle a pipe while the churning is going on (to take the coal out of the house).
    To bring back butter that has been taken one should leave a ploughshare in the fire while churning.
    No ashes should be thrown out on a Monday.
    No ashes or water should be thrown out on New Year's day. A big pot is placed behind the door to hold dirty water on that day.
    The custom of taking a burning stick from the house to a neighbours and another from that neighbour's to still another's until the whole townland was completed was once in vogue in this district on Halloween.
    Whistling at night was always forbidden by the old people. Or looking out the window.
    To prevent the latter small shutters were put on the windows - the windows were small.
    I've seen the shutters in one house - my grandfathers
