  1. Long ago marriages were different to what they are now. They used to go to weddings on horseback. When they were coming home they challenged each other to see which was the best rider. Whoever got into the grooms street first got a bottle of whiskey.
    That night there was a great party in the grooms house. Straw-boys came with straw tied around their bodies and heads. They danced sang and got drink. There were a great many marriages on Shrove Tuesday.
