- To prevent witches from stealing or spiriting away the milk from a cow the following plan was adopted. The owner of the cow went on May Eve to a running stream and gathered a quantity of water cress. He returned home and boiled the water cress in a certain quantity of water. After sunset he would bathe the cow (or cows) on several parts with the water and pour drops of it into her ears.Preventive.
