- A long time ago when the mines were working in Ballymurtagh there was a man living in Tigroney who was working in the mines. One night as he was about to go home he was standing on the Bell Rock wishing he could see something that would carry him across the river to where his home was. Just then a black calf came up behind and it said to him, "Get up on my back and I will carry you across the river to your own home safely". The man obeyed and got up on the calf's back. When he was settled on his back the calf rising jumped up into the air. Just when they were crossing the river the man sneezed. When the calf heard this being done he asked the man what did they say in this country when they sneezed and of course he said "God bless us". He hadn't the words well out of(continues on next page)
