- It was the custom of old people around Dunlavin to match their sons and daughters. At a match-making the parents of a young man and woman would meet at a market. If the man had a hundred acres of land, The parents of the girl would be obliged to give two or three hundred pounds to support the other members of the family and often times the match would be broken up over a few pounds. The match-making usually took place between Christmas and Shrove-Tuesday, if the parents agree the marraige(continues on next page)
