  1. Shops were not common in the olden times long ago. People had to go to the nearest town to buy groceries and drapery. In some places buying and selling were carried on after Mass and in other places the shops were closed on Sunday. The articles sold were sugar, tea, bread, butter, jam cakes, tobacco, and candles.
    Sometimes there is corn potatoes sold in exchange for goods. People work sometimes (for) to get their living.
    Long ago farmers used to exchange animals.
    Sometimes one farmer would exchange a cow for a horse with another farmer. The horse was of course the most valuable animal. The owner of the cow had to give five or ten pounds of "boot" to the other man. The farmers used to get goods in the shops and had not the money
