  1. Penal Times
    In the time of the Penal laws priests were not only not allowed to say Mass. But were themselves hunted and a price placed on their heads.
    For this reason they found it necessary to say Mass in secret places.
    One of these places in this [in this] district is still pointed out and still called "Church Field". This field belongs to Mr. A Rice of Ballinvalley, Borris and is about two miles from Rathanna School. A slight eminence crowned by a rock in the field is still called the mass Rock. And was the alter on which Mass was said by a bishop named Dr Byrne. A laneway or Mass Path still leads
