  1. The ancient town of Lea was situated about two hundred yards east of Lea castle, but with the rise of portarlington Lea fell into decay and consists of but a few cottages. In one of these cottages lives a fine old story-teller named Paddy Brady,who died some years ago. He loved to point out the spot inside his garden gate, where once stood the famous big tree of Lea. It was said to have been planted about the middle of the 17th century and grew to a great height. It was hollow in the centre and was
