    The children brought him a penny a week and that was the only pay he got. The master used to stop in a house in Catton. They were taught mostly Irish. I don't think that they had any sort of books. They wrote with a quill from a goose's wing. It is said that they had no seats, maps, or fire. The master was there for eight months of the year and could not stay the rest of the year with cold.
