  1. In my father's time all the shoes were made by the local shoe-maker.
    The shoes were "pegged" or stitched. The shoe-maker was generally very busy and occasionally "went on the spree" for a few days, and when the customer called at his house if one shoe was finished he would take it home lest some other customer might claim it. He had often to wait a month or longer for the other shoe.
