  1. There were a few old schools in this district long ago. There was one in Marlinstown but Mr Macken now uses it as a barn. Teachers taught in these schools. No Irish was taught. All the local children went to these schools. Schools were often held in farmers houses. The teachers often lodged in them.
    My grandfather went to the Downs school. Mr Henry Glynn taught him. Mr Henry was the father of the late Michael Glynn who owned the Downs post office.
    My grandfather died this year 1938 aged 75 years.
