  1. The old women used to collect all the soft weeds and tops young ash and elder trees and bring them to the ditch and get a hurdle made - rods platted together like a crandy - and put a fire a fire under the hurdle and put the weeds on the hurdle to dry.

    When dry they were moved to a clean place and set fire to.
    The ashes was then collected and mixed with water and baked on a red grid-iron until thoroughly dry. Then it was fit for washing.
    The soap balls were called ash-balls.
