- During the troubled period in Ireland when all catholic gentry were driven to "Hell or Connaught" by Cromwell and his brutal soldiers, there goods and chattels were divided among the officers of the Cromwellian army.
Cromwell and his troops invaded Ballinlough Castle with the intention of taking the Castle and estate from the rightful owner Sir Walter Nugent. Cromwell haveing previously promised them to a certain officer in the army.
