  1. There is an acre and a half of potatoes grown on our farm each year. My father engages a ploughman to prepare the land. The ground is well manured the year before it is turned up. The potatoes are sown in drills in big tillage fields but they are sown in ridges in the gardens. The ridges in the gardens are made with a spade.
    The ridges are marked at first with the spade and line. The garden ridges are about 4 ft wide with a "furrow" about 1 ft wide. The manure is spread on the ridge. The seed potatoes are "dropped" about ten ins from each other. Three potatoes are dropped across the ridge. The "furrows" are then dug and the potatoes covered. When the ridges are well covered the ridges are browed. For this fine clay is needed. The fine clay is put on the ridges to give them a good appearance. The drills are made with a double mould-board plough. When the ground is fine enough the drills are raised. When they are raised the manure is
