    six shoemakers nearly all Smiths in this district long ago: The reason for the decrease of shoemakers in this district is there are many factories which make boots and the people buy them from the shops, and not direct from the shoemakers nowadays.
    Long ago if a person had a good pair of uppers they would send them to the shoemakers and he would make clogs of them.
    Some time ago people would take the skins of the cattle and tan them and cut them into shoes with the hairy side out.
