    populated before hand. The crop of potatoes the year before the famine was very good.The farmers used to throw them along the road coming home because they could not get sale for them. The potatoes rotted in the ground before dug.
    The government supplied some seed for the following year and the people themselves saved some. They were planted with a spade in ridges and laid on rows on the ridges.
