- Drogheda in olden times was noted all over the country for its industries both in the homes and in the factories. The chief industries which were carried on in the home were:-
Spinning weaving and the making woollen mats
The industries of the factories were tanning candlemaking and the weaving of linen. The wool was spun on a spinning wheel. The mats were made on spools. Four nails were driven into the spools and the wool was ki knitted around the nails.
In this way a long thick string was made and this when joined together made lovely corded mats.- Collector
