  1. Long ago nearly all the houses had mud-walls, most thatched and some slated. The fire was placed at the gable wall. There was no chimney on it, but a bucket for one. In the middle of the flour, they had the turf fire. Some of the houses had no glass in the windows, but paper put on with putty. The old floors were made of clay. Half doors were very common. Candles and rushlights were used for giving light.
