  1. St. Stephen's day falls on the 26th December. It is a day of great enjoyment for all boys and girls. On that day they get a holly tree and they [interlined with carat: "put"] coloured papers on it and they catch a wren. Some of them dress themselves in boys old clothes and they put eyefiddles on their eyes so that the people would not know them. Then they go around [struck out and placed in parentheses: "for"] from house to house looking for money and this is the rhyme they have:–
The wren, the wren, the King of all birds,
St Stephen's day he was caught in the furze,
Up with the Kettle, and down with the pan,
Give me my answer and let me be gone.
St. Brigid's day falls on the 1st February. On that day the people make a small cross of two sticks and they tie it with a straw. They also go to St. Brigid's Well in Liscannor and they perform rounds there.
On St. Patrick's day the["y" struck out] people ["were" amended to "wear"] Shamrocks on the collars of their coats. The men also break clay pipes.
