    most cases thee were two or more houses in each yard and so enabled the people to chat from door to door.
    The light the people used was a dry rush dipped in tallow, the tallow being allowed to get firm.
    In many homes poteen was made. It was an intoxicating drink and used instead of whisky and porter but was much stronger. It was generally made at a hill in a still. People were very much afraid of it being found in their homes. They got a heavy penalty for making it and by making it they were disobeying the law of the land.
    However the people lived as happy as the day was long. They were very happy and
