  1. In most districts in Ireland many feasts are observed in a special manner as they occur each year. On St. Stephen's Day a band of boys travel round the country from house to house. These boys generally carry a holly bush which is dressed with ribbons and on it is placed a wren. The boys travel round singing the following song:-
"The wren, the wren, the king of all birds
On St. Stephen's Day she was caught in the furze,
Although she is little, her family is great,
Rise up young landlady and give us a treat."
In this way the wren boys collect a great deal of money. This money is divided evenly among them and is spent on refreshments.
