- (continued from previous page)hens and put a clutch of eggs under each hen. After about a month all the young ducks came out and she waved them up in the usual way. Mr. Mara dug a hole in his haggerd and put them into it and covered it with 'lettuce' wire. One morning he had the pony harnassed to take them to the markey. His sister fed them as usual but when he was going away she forgot to close the trap-door and all the ducks flew away in the direction of Parteen. That was the last sight he ever saw of them as they flew straight to Lough Derg. A bird in the hand is worth two on the bush.
In olden times Mountshannon domain was partly a forest of large beech and fir dale trees and thousands of crows used to hatch there every year. The owner of this domain was biggoted Protestant named De Burgo. One day he had an altercation with the Parish Priest of Castleconnel. The priests name was a Fr. O'Dwyer of Castleconnel. They argued away for a while and when he was going away he said "A crow will never build a nest again on your unholy domain". When the gentleman got up the following morning he saw thousands of crows assembling on his lawn viewing their nest's as they had fallen down during the night.
