    Four years ago I was digging in the land

    The next thing they gave me was a grey house.
    A bridle and saddle they flung my two legs across.
    They gave me a sword and bright piece of steel,
    It was then that my horse dance a fine reel.

    We fought in Alma likewise in German.
    But the Russians they beat us at the Red Dan.
    And scalding the walls myself lost an eye.
    And a big Russian bullet flew off with my tigh.

    The war is now over thank God at last.
    I am going to the office for my discharge,
    I spent but nine years instead of ten,
    Now Im home digging turf in Tralee again.
