  1. Weather Lore.
In the parish of Athea the old people have many beliefs about the weather, some of which are:-
(1). If the sun sets dim it is a sign that the next day will be wet. If the horizon appears red at sunset it foretells fine weather.
(2). If a ring is seen round the moon it foretells bad weather.
(3). If there is a great number of stars in the sky it is a sign that the next day will be cold and frosty.
(4). The western wind brings rain. The eastern wind is unhealthy. The northern wind will bring cold hard weather.
(5). When soot begins to fall it is a sign of rain.
(6). If red patches are seen in the sky it foretells a storm.
(7). If the swallows fly low it is a sign of bad weather.
(8). If the curlew is heard scream it is a sign of rain.
