  1. One of the great achievements of William Murphy Liscarroll was, to throw the sledge over the eastern wall of Liscarroll castle. There is a difference of opinion as to the type of hammer he made the great throw with. Some say it was a large hand-hammer as used by smiths for heavy work. The following, proves it was a sledge-hammer he used. He failed in the first and second attempts. Finding he had not a suficient grip on the handle he melted some cobbler's wax in the palm of his hand. In one mighty heave he threw the sledge over the wall, the handle leaving his hand with a sound like the crack of a whip. If he used a hammer in the attempt there would be no
