   In the war between James 11 and William it was used as a prison for Protestants of Cork, ordered into confinement by Lord Clare. When William's forces attacked it in 1691 they had to fight very hard to capture it. William sold the castle, which was bought by a man named Sir James Jeffries, who became Governor of Cork. It was he also who built the Mansion near the Castle.

   A chute can be seen over the main door of the Castle, by which boiled tar was poured down, in the event of an enemy threatening to enter. It is said that bullock's blood & hair was used in the building of the Castle. (mixed with mortar). The windows were built very narrow, the idea being to make
