- (continued from previous page)The Cuckoo builds no nest, but lays its eggs in the nest of another bird. It is said that the Robin got the red breast in this way: when our Saviour was dying on the cross the Robin piced the thorns off Our Lord's head, and a drop of blood fell on her breast, and she got the name of Robin because she robbed the thorns. It is said that the Snipe saved St. Patrick from being drowned. St. Patrick was asleep by a river, and the Snipe stood on him, and started screeching, and woke St. Patrick, and St. Patrick said anyone would never find its nest.
There was a man one day out shooting. He saw a Lepracan in a field. He stole around, and caught him. He asked the Leprecan for his gold. He showed him, and the man looked into the hole, and saw the gold, but while he was looking the Leprecan went away, and he could not go down for the gold, and he saw a Blackbird. He asked the Blackbird to go down, and she stuck her bill in the gold, and it is of a golden colour since.- Collector
