    The Famine
Some people believe that the direct cause of Famine was Father Matthew travelled Ireland making the people take the Pledge and recite the Sacred Promise. Temperance raged high in Ireland at that time. A great number of people took it and broke it after a week. God was so vexed with the people that he sent "blight" to ruin the potato crop.
