Some of the thatch was taken down and the wheaten straw was bundled together and the dirt shaken out of it. Then the straw was placed on the roof in position and fastened down with hazel sticks called scollops.
Wheaten straw is generally used as it lasts longer.
The way they made wheels was they got pieces of timber called fellows for the rim of the wheel and they they got straight pieces for spokes and a big block with a hole in the middle, which was called the stock of the wheel. Then they put a round piece of iron with a hole in it into the stock which was called the box. The axle went into the hole in the box.
Nails were made from pieces of iron (wire). Each one was hammered out flat on the top and pointed at the end.- Bailitheoir
