The smith shoes horses and asses but no cattle, and he makes farm implements, ploughs, harrows, spades, shovels, carts, etc. Some of the forge-work is done in the open air, at the back of the forge, shoeing wheels, In making spades, shovels, etc., you bring him the handles, and he reddens the iron and hammers it tout to the shape required and fits it into the handle with an iron band and nails. The smiths were always looked upon as very strong men, and the forge is a great place for news and storytelling.
