A Local Story
In the eighteenth century when the French were going from Castlebar to Ballinamuck they passed by this district. There was a public house in a field The Mill Field owned by Mr. Carley Mount Allen. The French officers drank all the drink in this house, and the poor man was not able to follow on with his trade.
One of the French officers thinking his companion was an English spy, he shot him. This man was buried in a field owned by James Early Corgorman Drumshanbo.
They also crossed the Shannon at a place called Ballintra.- Faisnéiseoir
