- In the year 1842 there was a great wind storm. It was said to have torn up trees from the roots.
It blew cocks of hay miles up in the air, and it blew badly built houses to pieces. It blew down gates and palings and it sent buckets and barrels floating down the canal.
Many animals and people were killed. Some were blown into rivers or canals and were drowned. Some more were hit by falling trees and some were hit by slates blown from the houses.
The doors and houses and windows were blown in. Travellers lost their way and animals were blown apart from one another and were lost. - Collector
