In olden times there were nunneries in Oughterard + Kilteel.

In olden times there were nunneries in Oughterard and Kilteel.
There is a holy well (St Brigid's) at Hartwell a place about midway between Ougherard and Kilteel.
The tradition of the origin of this well is that St Brigid on one occasion when passing between these two places felt felt very thirsty at Hartwell and immediately these springs of water sprang up before her.
People for miles around had great faith in this well and came to get cured of various ailments.
Traces of scapular, beads etc are still to be seen in the bank where the invalids left them behind.
