    There was only one quern-mill in this district (Ballydaniel & Tulla), and all the people used to go there every time they killed a goose, to get the quern-meal to make a cake to put in the goose soup.
    Before people brought wheat to the quern-mill they had first to wash the wheat, and then dry it thoroughly in a big pot on the fire. When it was dry they used to put it in a flour bag and go to the quern-mill. They also had to bring a candle, as it was usually dark when they arrived.

  2. People long ago used to put their butter in firkins. The man who made those was called a cooper. There is a family about half a mile from this school who used make firkins.
    Long ago people used to carry pails full of water or milk on their heads for a long distance, because in those days people had no handles in them.
