  1. "Mrs. Ellen Ryan was an old woman who had but one son. While she had a small shop the son was working on a small farm of eight Irish acres. In the shop she sold tobacco, candles, matches, tea, sugar, bread, and sweets. One evening in Summer a little boy called to the shop for a half-an-ounce of tobacco. She had the tobacco made up in ounce pieces but not in half-ounces. She searched the house for a knife to cut the ounce in two parts but could not get one sharp enough. Sooner than let the boy go without the tobacco she cut it in two even halves with her son's razor. That evening the son left off work early as he wanted to go to town. He had not shaved
