- The most harmful weeds growing on our farm are, scutch - grass, red -shanks, set - fast, rag - weeds, thistles, colts - foot, day - nettles, dockens, goose - tongue, rushes, comfry, and nettles. Set - fast, scutch - grass, and red - shanks, are harmful because the spread rapidly. Larger weeds, such as thistles, dockens, and rag - weeds, are harmful because they impoverish the soil.
Rushes are looked upon as growing only on wet heavy soil. Dockens grow only on good soil. Dockens, nettles, and colts - foots, are looked upon as having medicinal properties. Dockens will cure the sting of a nettle. They will cure a cough in either cattles or horses also. Nettles will cure rheumatism and pleurisy.
