Long ago the girls made daisy chains when the daisies were in bloom. They got chestnuts and made girdles for their frocks. They made paper beads with strips of coloured wall paper and rolled it and put varnish on them. They made their own dolls with small bags and smaller bags for their legs and arms. These were called rag dolls. The boys had toy guns made with a piece of elder tree, and they put a piece of steel in it for a trigger. They made their tops out of old spools and put nails in the end of them. They made their own slings and catapults with cord and leather. They killed birds with them. They made snares to catch rabbits. They made them with wire and two pieces of stick. The first marbles were made with blue clay. The children caught butterflies in butterfly cages. They made the cages with rushes. They made whips with rushes too, and the cooper made hoops for them to run along the road. The hoops were made of wood.
