  1. Very little news can be got from the old people about schools long ago in this neighbourhood. Many of the people can neither read nor write and we are lead to think that the education they got was very little. An old man remembers hearing of his forefathers attending a hedge school in Drumgoose where they were taught the three Rs. A local poet said:-
    "Paddy Byrne was a man of very great knowledge O.
    Behind a quick set hedge in a bog he kept his college O."
