Churchill where the Fane river enters the lake the ice was weak owing to the running water underneath and it broke. The poor boys sank in the icy water and disappeared under the ice. Many others who were skating near at hand ran to their help but could do nothing to save them and they both were drowned. Their dead bodies were recovered from the water next day and hundreds of people witnessed the sad sight.
