spread rapidly in spite of the rain. The smoke the heat, the crash of walls the crackle of burning timber the breaking of glass and above all the full blooded roar of the flames made a scene that will live forever in the memory of all that witnessed it. The lady of the house Mrs Lucas just escaped in her night-gown. Some of the servants suggested salvage and among this latter was the contents of the wine cellar. By the time that was disposed of there was neither time nor ability to salvage much and thus the precious contents went up in flames, when even a minimum of organisation would have saved much of that. Thus passed the last stronghold of landlordsism in this part of the country. When the flames were at their height tis said a black hare ran out of the castle, went on towards Monaghan and into Rossmore Castle where it still remains.
