    The fire started on a Sunday morning and it was the wettest Sunday in the memory of the people. The servants first noticed the smoke and gave the warning to the other workers that lived near at hand. When news of the fire spread all the men and youths of the country collected and altho many gave a willing hand there were many others not a whit sorry to see this symbol of landlordism and tyranny being burned out of existance. Word was sent to Monaghan for the fire brigade but the fire fighters were badly handicapped by lack of water and proper apparatus. Therefore no headway could be made and the castle had to be given up for lost. At this time the fire had gained complete control and
