  1. The year one thousand, eight hundred and ninety-five, locally known as ‘The Big Snow’ will long be remembered in this district. It occurred on the third Saturday of January one thousand, eighteen hundred and ninety-five which happened to be the fair-day in Ballybay.
    The snow began to fall in the early afternoon and by seven o’ clock in the evening it was two feet in depth. People visiting the fair left the town as early as possible and while the majority of them reached home without much trouble, some of them did not reach home until very late.
