  1. Not in the whole history of Ireland is there such sad and unforgetable reading as that of the Penal times. The cruel laws were directed mostly at the Catholic people for whom there was no respect. Bishops and Priests were banished. No Catholic could hold any position of authority or rank and the children of Catholic parents had to be sent to Protestant schools or bring them up ignorant. The good fertile lands were taken and given to Protestants and the barren wastes given to the Catholic
