    was safe, as the soldiers thought they had shot him.
    They had found a poor tramp hiding in a swamp on the landlord's farm who resembled him so much that several people identified the corpse to be his. A few days after, the wrong man was buried, and I stood behind the hedge on the road-way and watched his funeral pass which was supposed to be my own.
    That night after the Rosary he added a fervent "Pater Ave" and Gloria for the soul of the man who has personated him long ago.
