    always placed in the north side of the house and close to the fire.
    The fireplace was surrounded by a hob. It was built of mud and stones and took the form of three steps. The fire was on the hearth. In some of the old houses the fire was in the centre of the floor and there was a hole in the roof to let out the smoke. Chains were used for crooks.
    The floor was made of dab or flags.
    The windows consisted of holes in the walls with a wooden shutter hung on the outside. Half-doors were common. The old people tell how "Seamus saw the goat with the long beard looking out over the half door."
