One day the king went to the magician's school and he saw his son being turned into the hare and the hounds following him. He was very vexed and he struck the magician and turned him into a black pig and sent the hounds after him. The black pig rooted his way from Ballyshannon to Athlone and the hollow is still to be seen where he rooted. People in Belcarra were known to sell their land and to buy land in Rooskey to get away from the valley of the Black Pig.
When the pig came to the Shannon at Athlone a woman was washing clothes there and when she saw the black pig followed by the hounds, she hit him with the beetle and killed him.
