Mark Roche was a good Teacher (was a) but he was cross and a man in the village told me that when he was going to school he and one of his companions used often hide in the fields and not go to School at all. They used to have slates for writing on and every evening the Teacher would give them a lesson to write for home work for the following day The pupils would have to be able to spell all the hard words in it if the would not they would get a good thrashing. The pupils would bring two sods of turf each to school every morning during the Winter The one that would bring the most turf would be nearest the fire
