The scholar told him that a young man in England would come over and take it from him. The farmer became annoyed and the scholar told him he would find him a way of holding his farm. He told him to go to England, to visit a shoemaker's shop, to ask for Oliver Cromwell to do some repairs for him, to treat him very kindly and before leaving to get him to sign a paper that he would never trouble him in Ireland. The farmer did so and got Cromwell's signature. When Cromwell was in Ireland he came to the farmer's home but the latter produced his agreement. He had then to inform Cromwell why he got this agreement from him. Cromwell ordered him to find the poor scholar who had proved himself so clever and when he arrived he ordered him to be put on a horse in the middle of his army and he left the farmer unmolested. One day Cromwell's army was going past a church outside of which was a statue of the Blessed Virgin. As the poor scholar passed it he raised his cap.
