Some said these belonged to the fairies while others held that they used to shelter wandering spirits. People would not stand under these lone bushes at night because they felt they would be standing in the way of the spirits. About fifteen years ago a man named Thomas Concannon, Carnagur, Dunmore, Co. Galway cut branches off one of these lone bushes. He was but a young man about forty years of age and very soon after he fell ill and died. The people in the locality said that his interference with the lone bush was the cause of his death.
